U.S. accuses Iran, Venezuela of human trafficking failings

READ MORE WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The White House said on Saturday it had ordered that Iran, Venezuela and four African nations be added to a U.S. list of countries accused of failing to crack down on human trafficking, a step that further isolates them from the United States. The White House said it also was increasing restrictions on North Korea, Eritrea, Russia and Syria, which already were on the list, by constraining them from engaging in educational or cultural exchange programs with the United States. In addition, President Donald Trump’s administration instructed the U.S. executive director of the International Monetary Fund and U.S. executive directors at other multilateral development banks to vote against extending loans or other funds to North Korea, Russia and Iran for fiscal year 2018, which begins on Sunday. Under a 2000 U.S. law called the Trafficking Victims Protection Act, the United States does not provide non-humanitarian, non-trade-related foreign assista...

Russia warns U.S. over treatment of its media outlets

Image
READ MORE Russia is warning the United States: Back off our media. The country’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova issued a warning Thursday that Russia would retaliate if U.S. authorities took action against their government-funded media outlets in the U.S. RT and Sputnik. Every act, she said, will be met with a response. “Russia is dedicated to all international statues and norms regarding the freedom of speech and proved that on many occasions,” Zakharova said at her weekly briefing. “When it comes down to a fight with no rules, when the law is twisted and turned into an instrument for the destruction of a TV company, every step against a Russian media outlet will be met with a corresponding response. And whom this response will be aimed at, that is what Washington needs to figure out well. The clock is ticking.” Earlier this month, RT, the Russian-government funded television network that airs around the world in six languages and has a ...

The Wall Street Journal kills off its international print editions

Image
READ MORE The Wall Street Journal is giving up on printing newspapers for Asia and Europe. The 128-year-old paper will stop publishing its European edition on Friday, and its Asian edition a week later. The Wall Street Journal has been part of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp ( NWS ) empire since 2007. Falling overseas sales and plunging print advertising revenue in recent years drove the decision, according to the Journal. Related: WSJ staffers unhappy with cautious treatment of President Trump The paper will now focus entirely on its digital operations in the two regions. The move brings to an end the Journal’s run of more than 40 years of print editions in Asia nearly 25 years in Europe. It plans to print its U.S. edition daily in some cities like Tokyo at a later date. The closure come as parent News Corp struggles with declining print circulation and advertising revenue. U.S. civil liberties group to challenge Trump's new travel ban

READ MORE WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The American Civil Liberties Union on Friday launched the first legal challenge to President Donald Trump’s new restrictions on people entering the United States from eight countries. The civil rights group said in a statement that it will seek to amend an existing lawsuit in Maryland federal court that was filed against Trump’s previous March 6 ban. In a letter filed with U.S. District Court Judge Theodore Chuang, the ACLU said the new proposal announced on Sunday violates the U.S. Constitution as well as federal immigration law. Trump’s new ban places indefinite restrictions on travel to the United States for citizens from Iran, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, Chad and North Korea. Certain government officials from Venezuela will also be barred. The ACLU will seek an injunction that would block visa and entry restrictions on those affected. Challengers of Trump’s immigration restrictions have said the bans are aimed at follo...

Exclusive: Russian-bought Black Lives Matter ad on Facebook targeted Baltimore and Ferguson

Image
READ MORE At least one of the Facebook ads bought by Russians during the 2016 presidential campaign referenced Black Lives Matter and was specifically targeted to reach audiences in Ferguson, Missouri and Baltimore, sources with knowledge of the ads told CNN. Ferguson and Baltimore had gained widespread attention for the large and violent protests over police shootings of black men. The decision to target the ad in those two cities offers the first look at how accounts linked to the Russian government-affiliated troll farm known as the Internet Research Agency used geographically targeted advertising to sow political chaos in the United States, the sources said. Facebook has previously said that roughly one-quarter of the 3,000 ads bought by the agency were geographically targeted, but it has not revealed any specific locations. Facebook has also not revealed which demographic groups and interest groups were targeted by the ads. The Black Lives Matter ad appeared on Facebook at s...

U.S. directly communicating with North Korea, seeks dialogue

Image
READ MORE BEIJING (Reuters) – The United States said on Saturday it was directly communicating with North Korea, seeking to start a dialogue with Pyongyang as its advancing nuclear and missile programs stoke fears of an armed confrontation. U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson made the disclosure about the communications during a trip to China and said it was important to find a way to reduce tensions with North Korea. “We are probing, so stay tuned,” Tillerson told a group of reporters in Beijing. “We ask: ‘Would you like to talk?’ We have lines of communications to Pyongyang. We’re not in a dark situation, a blackout.” He said that communication was happening directly and cited two or three U.S. channels open to Pyongyang. “We can talk to them. We do talk to them,” he said, without elaborating about which Americans were involved in those contacts or how frequent they were. The goal of any initial dialogue would be simple: fi...

U.S. 'probing' to see if North Korea interested in dialogue: Tillerson

Image
READ MORE BEIJING (Reuters) – The United States is probing North Korea to see whether it is interested in dialogue and has multiple direct channels of communication with Pyongyang, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said on Saturday. The disclosure came as Tillerson expressed hope for reducing tensions with North Korea, which is fast advancing toward its goal of developing a nuclear-tipped missile capable of hitting the U.S. mainland. U.S. President Donald Trump has said he will never allow that to happen. “We are probing, so stay tuned,” Tillerson told a small group of reporters during a trip to China. “We ask: ‘Would you like to talk?’” He then said the United States had “a couple of, three channels open to Pyongyang.” “We can talk to them. We do talk to them,” he said, without elaborating. Tillerson’s remarks followed a day of meetings in Beijing, which has been alarmed by recent exchanges of war-like threats ...

Russia's Booming Fish Industry is a Great Lesson in Why Sanctions Don't Work

READ MORE When in 2014 the United States and the European Union slapped sanctions on Russian officials and business entities as punishment for what they called the “annexation” of Crimea and military intervention in the Donbas region of Ukraine, and, when Russia responded with its embargo on food products from those countries and rolled out a generalized policy of “import substitution” to sharply curtail dependency of the domestic economy on external factors of international relations, there were many observers both within Russia and in the West who predicted the failure of the Russian government’s efforts.  The dire predictions were based on a complete misreading of the mood and general political situation in Russia: the American legislators who initiated the sanctions believed that the punishment directed at the Kremlin entourage and big business would alienate the oligarchs from Vladimir Putin and lead to regime change, or at a minimum, to change i...

Teffi - a Pre

Image
READ MORE The grand house domestic serial which has been one of the staples of British television is quite impossible in Russia. That’s not because pre-revolutionary Russia lacked the aristo palaces and gilded families, or that nostalgia isn’t popular on television. It’s because the gap between the upstairs family and the downstairs servants was always too wide in Russia – and always too cruel. It’s not different today. The recent promotion in London and republication of the stories and memoirs of Teffi (lead image), the short-story fabulist, memoirist, poet and playwright who left Russia for Paris in 1919, illustrates the point – and not much else. Teffi.jpg “Upstairs, Downstairs” was the creation in 1969 of two actresses, Jean Marsh and Eileen Atkins, who had in mind a comedy. Then producer John Hawkesworth and script writer Alfred Shaughnessy turned it into a drama. The plot line follows an upper-class family of a Tory member of parli...
