Open Thread: Fashion Week Is Coming

READ MORE Q: I’m confused. I know that it seems to be increasingly acceptable to wear sneakers to work, for going out, etc. I went to Footlocker and other sporty stores; the new sneakers there are insane. There are so many layers of sneakerhead-dom that I am lost in a sea of sneakers. All I DO know is that I HATE the way those Balenciaga triple-sole sneakers look (and would never … could never … pay $875 for a pair of tennies). I already have two pairs of Stan Smiths, but they are so flat that my poor feet rebel. I am looking for some kind of pseudo running shoe. Help? — Maria, Cold Spring, N.Y. A: As someone approaching the marathon of fashion month, I have converted to spending much of my work life in Nikes and am all for the emergence of sneakers from sports to subculture to mainstream staple. But with such an explosion comes the related ill: option anxiety. Every brand is jumping on the bandwagon, and pretty much every trend is represented. I have some friend...

Where’s That Jumpsuit From? It’s a Long Story

READ MORE LOMÉ, Togo — Most of the brick-and-mortar shops in the Grand Marché de Hedzranawoe are shuttered, but plywood boutiques overflow the hallways and plazas that run through its geometric tiled corridors. Velvet dresses, boxer briefs, ties, overalls, wedding dresses and ear muffs hang from exposed beams like curtains on display. One morning in March, Amah Ayivi, a designer and clothing dealer, dug through mounds of utility jumpsuits, his hands bedecked with heavy silver rings. His soft eyes squinted and darted as he systematically sorted through the piles. “You can go through all of this and only find one, or zero, or 20,” he said over the rhythmic squeaking horns and the nasal cries of food and drink vendors. Mr. Ayivi said he was looking for “old-school and vintage and good colors and materials” that he would later ship to Paris and upsell as vintage under his label Marché Noir. Railway to Churchill, Man., sold — repairs to begin 'immediately'

READ MORE Repairs on a vital rail link to northern Manitoba are set to begin immediately, the federal government said Friday, following a deal to sell the flood-damaged line leading to the remote town of Churchill. The community of roughly 1,000 people — Canada’s only deep-water Arctic port — has been without a land route since the railway flooded in May 2017. The closure drove up costs for fuel and food, which had to be brought in by air or ship. The railway and the Port of Churchill have been purchased from Denver-based Omnitrax Inc. by Arctic Gateway Group Limited Partnership, a private-public partnership that includes Missinippi Rail Limited Partnership, Fairfax Financial Holdings and AGT Limited Partnership. Churchill Mayor Mike Spence said the deal means communities along the line are now equal owners of the railway. The arrangement  includes the participation  of 30 First Nations and 11...

Information technology jobs outpace most other jobs in productivity and growth since 2004

READ MORE “The future of jobs is in IT, and IT-intensive tasks” said Giovanni Gallipoli, co-author and associate professor from the Vancouver School of Economics at UBC. “Growth and productivity in jobs involving IT tasks are very strong, and workers who can perform such tasks have a clear competitive advantage in the labour market.” The study reveals the well documented slow-down in employment and wage gains associated with skills and education that has been recorded after the year 2000 is in fact not occurring at all for jobs that involve IT. The share of these jobs has increased substantially over the past two decades, with IT-intensive occupations growing by 19.5 per cent between 2004 and 2017. Less IT-intensive occupations only grew by 2.4 per cent over the same period. The growth in IT jobs is more than eight times the growth rate than for other jobs over the past decade. “While there is clear evidence that earnings growth for Americans with college d...

Novel concepts for the diagnosis of fatty liver and personalized treatment

READ MORE In recent years there have been many new findings and results in NAFLD research. It is difficult to integrate this enormous amount of new data from basic research and clinical hepatology and endocrinology research into clinical practice. Professor Norbert Stefan and Professor Hans-Ulrich Häring — both from Tübingen University Hospital and the Institute for Diabetes Research and Metabolic Diseases (IDM) of the Helmholtz Zentrum München, a partner of the DZD, together with Professor Kenneth Cusi from the University of Florida (USA) have evaluated the most important data of NAFLD research and compiled them in a review article. The authors propose the use of new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in the clinic to enable a specific risk prognosis for possible secondary diseases. “Not only patients with elevated liver enzymes should be examined for fatty liver, but also people with a disproportionate fat distribution, i.e. a high proportion of abdominal...

John McCain Lies in State in the Capitol: ‘We Lost a Good One’

READ MORE Out of the range of news photographers who captured the day’s every ceremonial flourish, Mr. Graham sat at his desk, Ms. McCain at her husband’s next to him, as they talked quietly for a few minutes in the same spot where Mr. McCain delivered his final Senate floor speech last year. Mr. Graham pulled out two of the roses and gave them to his friend’s widow. Mr. McCain’s remembrance drew many mourners who identified themselves as proud Democrats, and said they had never voted for the senator and had frequently disagreed with his policies. With sharp criticism of the current administration and the polarization in Congress, they said he was among the last politicians willing to take bipartisan steps. “We lost a good one in John,” said Kitt Rodkey, 64, who took a personal day from work to pay his respects to Mr. McCain. “No one is perfect, but he came pretty close.” Standing next to him, Cooper Brockington, a therapist from Reston, V...

MLB notebook: Donaldson reportedly shipped to Tribe

Image
READ MORE Josh Donaldson, the 2015 American League MVP who hasn’t played in the majors since May 28 due to a left calf strain, reportedly was dealt from the Toronto Blue Jays to the Cleveland Indians on Friday. Multiple media outlets reported Wednesday that the Blue Jays placed the 32-year-old third baseman on waivers, and Yahoo Sports’ Jeff Passan reported Friday evening that a deal was completed with the Indians. It was not immediately known what Toronto received in the trade. If Donaldson, who was hitting .234 with five home runs and 16 RBIs in 36 games this season, is on Cleveland’s 40-man roster as of Aug. 31, he would be eligible for postseason play with his new team. Donaldson, who can be a free agent after this season, made two rehab appearances for high Class-A Dunedin this week, going 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI on Tuesday, then 1-for-3 with a solo homer on Thursday. —The Milwaukee Brewers are set to acquire left-hander Gio Gonzalez (7-11, 4.57 ERA i...

Raonic stops Wawrinka's charge at Flushing Meadows

Image
READ MORE NEW YORK (Reuters) – Big-serving Canadian Milos Raonic halted former champion Stan Wawrinka’s charge at the U.S. Open on Friday, beating the Swiss wildcard 7-6(6) 6-4 6-3 to book his berth in the last 16. Wawrinka, making his first return to the site of his 2016 triumph since undergoing knee surgery, showed he was still shaking off the ring rust despite encouraging victories in the first two rounds. The first set went down to the wire with nothing to choose between the two rivals, neither of whom were unduly troubled on serve. Raonic lost the first three points of the tiebreak before recovering to level at 3-3 and showed great strength of character to save two set points before going on to claim the opener. “It was tough,” the Canadian said in an on-court interview. “I was fortunate I got through that because I was falling behind in that tiebreak.” Wawrinka, who had won four of his five previous matches against Raonic, could not match his op...

U.S. associate of indicted Russian pleads guilty, to cooperate with Mueller

READ MORE (Reuters) – An American who is the business partner of a Russian national accused by U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller of having ties to Russian intelligence pleaded guilty on Friday to unregistered lobbying for a pro-Kremlin political party in Ukraine. Samuel Patten, 47, also agreed to cooperate with Mueller’s probe. Patten admitted to arranging for a U.S. citizen to act as a straw purchaser to pay $50,000 for four tickets to the inauguration of President Donald Trump on behalf of a Ukrainian oligarch, who reimbursed Patten through a Cypriot account. The move circumvented U.S. law prohibiting foreigners from providing money to an organization running the inauguration. The tickets were given to the oligarch, another Ukrainian, Patten and the Russian national, according to the charging documents. While the documents did not name the Russian national, the description matches Konstantin Kilimnik, Patten’s business partner, who was indicted along with former Tr...

Aretha Franklin's gospel roots celebrated at Queen of Soul's funeral

Image
READ MORE DETROIT (Reuters) – A Detroit church swelled with the sound of gospel music on Friday as family, friends and fans of Aretha Franklin bid rousing farewell to the Queen of Soul at a funeral that featured tributes by former U.S. President Bill Clinton and singer Stevie Wonder. “Come on, this is a church service, lift your voice!” Bishop Charles Ellis III, the officiant, exhorted the congregation at the Greater Grace Temple, as the choir and orchestra swayed behind him. The crowd grew louder, its ranks bolstered by the powerful voices of Gladys Knight, Jennifer Hudson, Chaka Khan, Shirley Caesar and Ariana Grande, who came to pay musical tribute to Franklin following her death on Aug. 16 at age 76. Before the golden casket was closed at the top of a service, Franklin’s body could be seen dressed in gold sequins. More than eight music-filled hours later, Stevie Wonder took to the stage to close out the ceremony with a performance of his song “As,...

California lawmakers send strict 'net neutrality' laws to governor

Image
READ MORE LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – California lawmakers sent to the governor’s desk for final approval strict “net neutrality” laws on internet providers that would defy sweeping Federal Communications Commission rules seen as a boon for the companies. The Democrat-controlled California Senate voted 27-12 to pass the bill, known as SB 822, with just hours left in the legislative session. The measure was approved by their colleagues in the state Assembly one day earlier. Governor Jerry Brown, also a Democrat, has not yet said if he would sign the bill into law. He has 30 days to act but does not typically signal his intentions before legislation lands on his desk. Members of the California Assembly voted 58-17 to send the bill to their colleagues in the state Senate, who have until midnight to pass so-called SB 822 on the final day of the legislative session or wait until next year. If the measure passes both chambers of the Democrat-controlled state legislature it...

Former NBC producer who worked on Ronan Farrow's Harvey Weinstein reporting breaks silence

Image
READ MORE A veteran NBC News producer who worked with Ronan Farrow on Farrow’s explosive story on disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein has left the network and is speaking out, calling the network’s decision not to make the story public “a massive breach of journalistic integrity.” Rich McHugh, who left NBC News’ investigative unit recently, said in a statement provided to CNN that the orders not to run the story came from “the highest levels of NBC. That was unethical.” “At a critical juncture in our reporting on Harvey Weinstein, as we were about to interview a woman with a credible allegation of rape against him, I was told not to do the interview and ordered to stand down, thus effectively killing the story,” McHugh said in the statement. An NBC News spokesperson said in a statement that “the assertion that NBC News tried to kill the Weinstein story while Ronan Farrow was at NBC News, or even more ludicrously, aft...
