Canada, U.S. have reached a NAFTA deal

Image
READ MORE Canada and the U.S. have announced a tentative new trilateral trade deal with Mexico that includes some key concessions on issues of import to both countries — and also a reworked name: the United States, Mexico and Canada Agreement (USMCA). “USMCA will give our workers, farmers, ranchers, and businesses a high-standard trade agreement that will result in freer markets, fairer trade and robust economic growth in our region,” Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said in a joint statement released late Sunday. Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland and United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, shown in January, released a joint statement late Sunday. (Graham Hughes/Canadian Press) “It will strengthen the middle class, and create good, well-paying jobs and new opportunities for the nearly half billion people who call North America home,” the statement sa...

Publicizing a firm's security levels may strengthen security over time, study finds

READ MORE Now, new research from the UBC Sauder School of Business has quantified the security levels of more than 1,200 Pan-Asian companies in order to determine whether increased awareness of one’s security levels leads to improved defense levels against cybercrime. The study found that when cyberattacks were less likely to directly harm a company, organizations were unlikely to prioritize security improvements. Firms were more likely to fix issues related to spam emails originating from their compromised computers, but failed to act when they were found to host phishing websites on their servers. Most of the firms with phishing websites are actually hosting service providers. The researchers conducted a randomized field experiment on organizations in Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Macau, Malaysia and Taiwan — which were chosen for their significant economic development as well as rapid adoption of technologies. The experiment evaluated each organization’s preparedness...

Research teams find widespread inflammation in the brains of fibromyalgia patients

READ MORE “We don’t have good treatment options for fibromyalgia, so identifying a potential treatment target could lead to the development of innovative, more effective therapies,” says Marco Loggia, PhD, of the MGH-based Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging, co-senior author of the report. “And finding objective neurochemical changes in the brains of patients with fibromyalgia should help reduce the persistent stigma that many patients face, often being told their symptoms are imaginary and there’s nothing really wrong with them.” Characterized by symptoms including chronic widespread pain, sleep problems, fatigue, and problems with thinking and memory, fibromyalgia affects around 4 million adults in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Previous research from the Karolinska group led by Eva Kosek, MD, PhD, co-senior author of the current study, suggested a potential role for neuroinflammation in the condition ...

Democrats Denounce Limits on F.B.I.’s Kavanaugh Inquiry as a ‘Farce’

READ MORE That description was challenged by Chris Dudley, a former N.B.A. player and close friend of Judge Kavanaugh’s who attended Yale and played basketball with Mr. Ludington. Mr. Dudley said he was certain that he “never, ever saw Brett Kavanaugh black out” from drinking, and “never, ever saw him act inappropriately toward any woman in the 35 years that I’ve known him.” The dueling statements emerged as the political combat around Judge Kavanaugh’s confirmation process intensified. Democrats lashed out over the size and shape of the inquiry, saying it threatened to become a sham that would deepen, rather than help heal, the country’s divisions about Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination. Senator Mazie K. Hirono, a Hawaii Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, said on ABC’s “This Week” that any investigation that limits whom the F.B.I. can interview and which leads agents can follow would be a “farce.” Senator ...

U.S. and Canada Reach Deal to Salvage Nafta

READ MORE Lawmakers from both parties have urged the White House to include Canada in any revised Nafta, warning that excluding Canada, which is America’s largest export market, could disrupt supply chains, cost jobs and slow the United States economy. Companies and business groups, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, have repeatedly called on Mr. Trump to ensure Canada remains part of the pact, which has become critical for industries across North America, including automakers, agriculture and manufacturers. Industry groups cheered the deal on Sunday night. “Manufacturers are extremely encouraged that our call for a trilateral agreement between the United States, Canada and Mexico has been answered,” Jay Timmons, president of the National Association of Manufacturers. Discussions between the United States and Canada had stalled amid souring relations between Mr. Trudeau and Mr. Trump, who lashed out at Canada last week during the United Nations General Assembly ...

NFL notebook: Thomas breaks leg, makes obscene gesture

Image
READ MORE Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas was carted off the field in the fourth quarter Sunday after what head coach Pete Carroll confirmed after the game was a fracture in the All-Pro’s lower left leg. As he was being carted off, the 29-year-old Thomas made an obscene gesture toward his own team’s sideline, raising his middle finger. It was unclear for whom the gesture was intended, as Thomas was on the other side of the field near the Arizona Cardinals’ sideline. Thomas has been involved in a pay dispute with the Seahawks, holding out of training camp. Thomas went down in the end zone as the Arizona Cardinals scored a touchdown on a 22-yard Josh Rosen pass to Chad Williams with 8:59 left. He stayed down in a lot of pain before being put on a cart with his left leg in an air cast. Players from both teams showed their support as he was taken off the field. —The Pittsburgh Steelers have gone from taking calls on holdout running back Le’Veon Bell to maki...

MLB roundup: Two NL tiebreaker games set

Image
READ MORE Charlie Blackmon hit an RBI double in the eighth inning to complete the cycle, and the Colorado Rockies beat the Washington Nationals 12-0 on Sunday in Denver to tie the Los Angeles Dodgers for first place in the National League West. Blackmon tripled in the first, homered in the third and singled in the fifth to help Colorado make quick work of the Nationals and force an extra game for the division crown. The Dodgers and Rockies will meet Monday in Los Angeles, with the winner taking the division and the loser playing either the Milwaukee Brewers or the Chicago Cubs in the NL wild-card game on Tuesday. Nolan Arenado homered twice, David Dahl and Trevor Story also went deep, and Tyler Anderson pitched 7 2/3 sharp inning for the Rockies, who will play in a 163rd game for the second time. In 2007, they beat the San Diego Padres to earn a wild-card berth, and then went on to sweep through the NL playoffs on the way to the World Series. Dodgers 15, Giants 0 Matt Kemp singled, dou...

A Penthouse Made for Instagram

READ MORE This penthouse apartment in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood is awash in natural light, with high ceilings, gleaming hardwood floors and a rooftop deck. The living room area includes a sofa in the rosy hue known as millennial pink, the kitchen comes equipped with a floor-to-ceiling wine fridge, and the library nook is filled with books chosen for their appearance, not their contents. The white walls are spotless, and there is never any clutter. Nobody lives here. The 2,400-square-foot space — which rents for $15,000 a month — was designed as a backdrop for Instagram stars, who have booked it through October. It was opened in August by Village Marketing, an agency that connects advertisers like the eyewear company Warby Parker and the Equinox fitness company to the social media personalities known as influencers. The ones who work with Village Marketing — mostly stylish young women who are paid to promote products on Instagram — have amasse...

Canada, U.S. reach deal to save NAFTA as trilateral trade pact

Image
READ MORE OTTAWA/WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States and Canada forged a last-gasp deal on Sunday to salvage NAFTA as a trilateral pact with Mexico, rescuing a three-country, $1.2 trillion open-trade zone that had been about to collapse after nearly a quarter century. In a joint statement, the two nations said the new United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) would “result in freer markets, fairer trade and robust economic growth in our region”. Negotiators worked frantically ahead of a midnight ET (0400 GMT) U.S. imposed deadline to settle differences, with both sides making concessions to seal the deal. “It’s a good day for Canada,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters after a late-night cabinet meeting to discuss the agreement, which triggered a jump in global financial markets. President Donald Trump, who blamed NAFTA for the exodus of manufacturing jobs to low-wage Mexico, had threatened to walk away from NAFTA unless major chang...

Indonesia rushes to help quake-hit island, death toll likely to rise past 830

Image
READ MORE PALU, Indonesia (Reuters) – Indonesian authorities scrambled on Monday to get aid and rescue equipment into quake-hit Sulawesi island, and prepared to bury some of the at least 832 dead, while the government said it would accept international help for disaster relief. The confirmed toll of 832 dead looked certain to rise as rescuers slowly reached devastated outlying communities hit on Friday by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami waves as high as six meters (20 feet). Dozens of people were reported to be trapped in the rubble of several hotels and a mall in the small city of Palu, 1,500 km (930 miles) northeast of Jakarta, with hundreds more feared buried in landslides that engulfed villages. President Joko Widodo told reporters in Jakarta getting those people out was a priority. “The evacuation is not finished yet, there are many places where the evacuation couldn’t be done because of the absence of heavy equipment, but last night equipment st...

Trump on Twitter (Sept 30): Kanye West, Black Vote, Kavanaugh

Image
READ MORE The following statements were posted to the verified personal Twitter account of U.S. President Donald Trump (@realDonaldTrump) The opinions expressed are his own. Reuters has not edited the statements or confirmed their accuracy. @realDonaldTrump : – Like many, I don’t watch Saturday Night Live (even though I past hosted it) – no longer funny, no talent or charm. It is just a political ad for the Dems. Word is that Kanye West, who put on a MAGA hat after the show (despite being told “no”), was great. He’s leading the charge! [1257 EDT] – So if African-American unemployment is now at the lowest number in history, median income the highest, and you then add all of the other things I have done, how do Democrats, who have done NOTHING for African-Americans but TALK, win the Black Vote? And it will only get better! [1347 EDT] – Wow! Just starting to hear the Democrats, who are only thinking Obstruct and Delay, are starting ...

UK Sending 800 Troops to Arctic Citing Russian Threat

Image
READ MORE With the Russian-British relations going downhill after the Skripal poisoning, Gavin Williamson has revealed details of Britain’s plan that he branded a “defence Arctic strategy,” which could reportedly be the largest operation of its kind since the Cold War. Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson has announced in the interview to the Sunday Telegragh that the UK is  planning  to open a new military base in the northern part of Norway and deploy 800 Royal Marine and Army troopers to the country every winter for 10 years from 2019. They are to operate with the US and Dutch troopers there. Together with 3,000 commandos, sent to take part in the NATO drills, the total number of the deployed troops will top 40,000. As Williamson told the Telegragh, the Cabinet was drawing a “defence Arctic strategy” to boost the country’s military presence while concerns about ...

Canada 'cautiously optimistic' a NAFTA deal is in hand, ambassador says, as deadline looms

Image
READ MORE Canada’s ambassador to Washington says he is optimistic a renegotiated NAFTA could soon be had, telling reporters Sunday that officials are working furiously to secure a trilateral deal hours out from a U.S.-imposed deadline of Oct. 1.  “It’s good — we’re working hard,” David MacNaughton said after leaving Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s office in Ottawa Sunday. “We’ve been at it for a long time so, you know, I’m cautiously optimistic but we’ll see.” Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland and senior members of Trudeau’s team, including his principal secretary, Gerry Butts, are holed up in Ottawa, connected via video link to their counterparts in the U.S., furiously negotiating some final details of the trilateral trade deal. Both sides have their eyes on a fast-approaching deadline of midnight tonight. Senior Canadian sources, with direct knowledge of the situation,...
