US Air Dominance Falters As Pilots Contend With Advanced Russian Anti-Aircraft Systems

Image
READ MORE The Pentagon has now acknowledged that the new Russian air defense systems have severely restricted the US Air Force’s freedom of movement in US overseas operations. The report, published in part by the  Wall Street Journal  (WSJ), is presented as a big surprise. But, as early as the Cold War, US pilots and their NATO allies had shown the utmost respect for the precursor systems of the modern Russian S-300 and S-400 systems. The quoted Pentagon report therefore basically does not reveal anything new. The S-400 Triumf anti-air missile system The only new issue is that Russia has introduced these missile systems into the hotspot of Syria in order to limit the operations launched by the US Air Force. The loss of absolute dominance in airspace has hit the US War Department particularly hard. If the Pentagon “reports” such developments to the media, it is usually to obtain more money from taxpayers however. The military industrial complex often complains...

When neurons get the blues

READ MORE “This is a promising step toward understanding why some patients don’t respond to SSRIs and letting us better personalize treatments for depression,” says Salk Professor Rusty Gage, the study’s senior author, president of the Institute, and the Vi and John Adler Chair for Research on Age-Related Neurodegenerative Disease. Depression affects 300 million people around the world, and more than 6 percent of the US population experiences an episode of major depressive disorder (MDD) in any given year. MDD has been linked to an imbalance in serotonin signaling, although the exact mechanism is not well understood. When brain cells signal with serotonin, the neurotransmitter is released from one cell, binds to receptors on neighboring cells, and is then transported back into the first cell. SSRIs increase levels of serotonin available for signaling by blocking the transporter that normally moves serotonin back inside cells, in a process known as reuptake. Gage ...

How whipworms wreak havoc on the gut

READ MORE The human gut is home to millions of bacteria, collectively called the microbiota, and also to parasites such as whipworms, which cause a human disease called trichuriasis. Cells lining the gut host whipworms but also interact with gut immune cells to deploy measures that control or expel whipworms while maintaining a barrier to prevent microbial movement to organs such as the liver. Whipworms affect the composition of the microbiota, which in turn impacts the condition of the gut lining and the way in which immune cells are activated. In order to avoid tissue damage and disease, these interactions are tightly regulated. Using a mouse model, Duque-Correa and colleagues show that these interactions are regulated by signaling through a member of the IL-10 receptor family, IL-10Rα, on gut immune cells. Lack of this receptor on gut immune cells results in persistence of whipworms in the gut accompanied by uncontrolled inflammation that destroys the gut lining. This tissue dam...

Venezuela, the Deep State, and Subversion of the Trump Presidency

Image
READ MORE There he was, right there on the stage to the right side of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who was briefing the press on America’s position concerning the recent coup in Venezuela. I rubbed my eyes—was I seeing what I thought I was seeing? It was Elliot Abrams. What was HE doing there? After all, back in February 2017, after then-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had pushed for his nomination as Deputy Secretary of State, it was President Trump himself who had vetoed his appointment. Here is how the anodyne account in Wikipedia describes it: In February 2017, it was reported that Abrams was Secretary of State  Rex Tillerson ‘s first pick for  Deputy Secretary of State , but that Tillerson was subsequently overruled by Trump.  Trump aides were supportive of Abrams , but Trump opposed him because of Abrams’ opposition during the campaign.  [emphasis mine] Abrams during the 2016 campaign had been a NeverTrumper who vigorously opposed Do...
