Michael Flynn’s Lawyers Escalate Attacks on Prosecutors

READ MORE Mr. Flynn hired his new lawyers in June, including Sidney Powell, who has repeatedly attacked the special counsel’s prosecutors in appearances on Fox News. A day before submitting the latest court filings, Ms. Powell retweeted a message that both accused F.B.I. officials of entrapping Mr. Flynn and tried to raise money for his defense fund. Ms. Powell told the judge, as she had earlier, that she also requires a security clearance and access to classified material related to Mr. Flynn’s conversations with the Russian ambassador, Sergey I. Kislyak, in the month after Mr. Trump’s election. The lies Mr. Flynn told to F.B.I. agents came in response to questions about whether he and Mr. Kislyak discussed sanctions that the departing Obama administration had just imposed on Russia. “We must have access to that information to represent our client consistently with his constitutional rights and our ethical obligations,” Mr. Flynn’s lawyers wrote. How a Trump Tax Break to Help Poor Communities Became a Windfall for the Rich

READ MORE At least some struggling neighborhoods are already starting to receive investments. In Birmingham , for example, a developer is using opportunity-zone funds to convert a building, vacant for decades, into 140 apartments primarily aimed at the local work force. “We are seeing projects that are being announced here in Alabama that would not have happened otherwise,” said Alex Flachsbart, founder of Opportunity Alabama , which is trying to steer investors to economically struggling neighborhoods. Similar projects are getting underway in Erie, Cleveland and Charlottesville, Va. Goldman Sachs is using some of its capital gains — profits on the company’s own investments — in opportunity zones, including $364 million for mixed-income housing developments in Salt Lake City, Baltimore and other cities. Mr. Case, the AOL co-founder, and Derrick Morgan, a former professional football player, are among those who have announced that they will invest in oppor...

Kyrgios goes quietly into the New York night

READ MORE NEW YORK (Reuters) – Nick Kyrgios was a lightning rod for controversy at the U.S. Open this week but the fiery Australian was subdued after a third-round loss on Saturday and walked away quietly from the year’s final Grand Slam. Kyrgios did deliver a one-word jab at a line judge early in his straight-sets loss to Russian Andrey Rublev but otherwise steered clear of any of the sort of drama that he made headlines for earlier in the week. The Australian delivered a serving masterclass against Rublev but generally lacked his usual intensity and at one point during the match a microphone picked up Kyrgios saying he did not even want to be there. Still, after the 7-6(5) 7-6(5) 6-3 loss under the bright Arthur Ashe Stadium lights, the Australian 28th seed did not point the blame at anyone but himself. “He played great tonight. Was super aggressive. I never felt comfortable. That was just credit to him playing his game. Yeah, it was tough,” said Kyrgios. ...

Kyrgios sent packing as Rublev reaches last 16

READ MORE NEW YORK (Reuters) – Nick Kyrgios’ eventful U.S. Open ended in the third round as Russian Andrey Rublev turned aside the fiery Australian 7-6(5) 7-6(5) 6-3 in a battle of big servers on Saturday. Rublev looked up to the task from the start and proved to be unflappable against Kyrgios, who complained to his team in the box several times about not being able to see and later said he took time adjusting to the massive Arthur Ashe Stadium. The Australian seemed to have no issues with his vision on serve, however, at one point firing four consecutive aces in a 40-second game to force a first-set tiebreak. He saved two set points before sending a backhand just wide to lose the opener. Kyrgios got his only two break point chances while leading 3-2 in the second set but Rublev beat them both back. The pair remained on serve to bring up another tiebreak and while Kyrgios jumped out to a 4-0 lead a determined Rublev took seven of the next eight points to snatch the set and g...

Auto sales in August to be 'far worse' than July, analysts expect 30% fall

READ MORE The slowdown nightmare for the automobile industry is expected to continue for August as analysts estimate an overall sales downfall of up to 30 per cent. In a survey conducted by IANS , industry experts were quick to point out that August will be far worse in sales than July, especially due to havoc caused by Monsoon rains across India. They estimated that sector might face an overall sales downfall of up to 30 per cent on a year-on-year basis, with passenger vehicle segment being the worst hit. Interestingly, this year August came just ahead of the festive season and before the slew of growth inducing measures announced by the government. “The turnaround in the industry is months away since any of the measures recently taken to deal with the sales slowdown or to prop-up consumer sentiment will take time to bring a turnaround,” Grant Thornton India LLP Partner, Sridhar V. told IANS. “All in all, August seems to be a similar or even worse sales glide p...

‘I Am on My Way to Being Very Well,’ Justice Ginsburg Tells Thousands of Fans

READ MORE Justice Ginsburg, 86, was in Buffalo on Monday to receive an honorary degree . She is scheduled to be in North Little Rock, Ark., on Tuesday . Demand for tickets was so high that the event was moved to a sports arena with a capacity of about 18,000. Nina Totenberg, the NPR correspondent who interviewed Justice Ginsburg on Saturday, said there were another 16,000 people on the waiting list for her appearance in Arkansas. Over the next three weeks, Justice Ginsburg will also appear in Raleigh, N.C., Chicago , twice in New York and again in Washington. The appearances tend to follow a pattern: a standing ovation from an adoring crowd, followed by questioning from a sympathetic interviewer. Justice Ginsburg tells nicely honed anecdotes about her earlier career as a feminist professor and litigator, her marriage, the Supreme Court and the law. She lands a couple of jokes. She describes her unlikely friendship with Justice Antonin Scalia, who died in 2016 . But the tone was a li...

READ MORE Leslie Howard Gelb was born on March 4, 1937, in New Rochelle, N.Y., to Max and Dorothy (Klein) Gelb, Jewish immigrants from Hungary. “He was a poor boy with bad eyesight and a sly, full-lipped smile,” Mr. Packer wrote. “The Gelbs read no newspapers and owned two books — the Bible and ‘The Rothschilds.’ They were loving parents with the worst lives of anyone Les knew.” He graduated from New Rochelle High School and received a bachelor’s degree in government from Tufts University in 1959 after working his way through school as a valet parking attendant and dishwasher. “He was so poor that his bride Judy’s parents refused to bless the marriage and so smart that he got into Harvard’s graduate school in government and so badly educated that he had no idea what his teachers were talking about,” Mr. Packer wrote. Mr. Gelb earned a master’s and a doctorate in government and developed a fervor for internatio...

Kirsten Gillibrand Exits and a One-Night Debate: This Week in the 2020 Race

READ MORE A roller-coaster week in polling The week began with a Monmouth University poll showing dramatic movement in the Democratic race, with Mr. Sanders and Ms. Warren at 20 percent each and Mr. Biden at 19 percent — down 13 percentage points from a Monmouth poll taken two months earlier. But after several other polls showed a picture much more in line with the Biden-leading status quo, Monmouth’s polling director, Patrick Murray, said it was clear that his survey had been an outlier. Two polls released Wednesday morning showed Mr. Biden at 32 percent, comfortably ahead of Ms. Warren and Mr. Sanders. The first poll, from USA Today and Suffolk University, showed Ms. Warren at 14 percent and Mr. Sanders at 12; the second, from Quinnipiac University, showed Ms. Warren at 19 percent and Mr. Sanders at 15. Ms. Harris and Mr. Buttigieg were the only other candidates to break 5 percent. Here’s a look at the how the polling picture has come into focus . And no, you canno...

Hamlin DQ'd; Custer wins Xfinity race at Darlington

READ MORE DARLINGTON, S.C. – It looked like more of the same at Darlington Raceway for driver Denny Hamlin — until post-race inspection happened. A five-time NASCAR Xfinity Series winner at the 1.366-mile track, Hamlin was first across the finish line in Saturday’s Sport Clips Haircuts VFW 200, but the disqualification of Hamlin’s No. 18 Toyota for a ride-height violation made a winner of Cole Custer, who trailed Hamlin by .602 seconds at the finish line. “It’s a really strange feeling, honestly — obviously,” Custer said after being notified he was the winner. “You don’t want that way, but it is what it is. We all play by the same rules. Was that the deciding factor? No. “But it is what it is. We get the points. We get the money. We get the trophy, I guess. It’s a way to win.” The victory was the first for Custer at the Track Too Tough to Tame and his sixth of the season, tying him with fourth-place finisher C...

Bahamas government warns tourists and residents to shelter from Dorian

READ MORE (Reuters) – Authorities in the Bahamas made a last-minute plea to residents and tourists on Saturday to seek shelter as time ran out before powerful Hurricane Dorian hits, warning those that refused to move that their lives were at risk. “Hurricane Dorian is a devastating, dangerous storm approaching our islands,” Bahamas Prime Minister Hubert Minnis said in a nationally televised news conference. Packing maximum sustained winds of 150 mph (240 kph), the Category 4 storm was forecast to hit the Bahamas on Sunday with more than two feet of rainfall in places, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. Dorian was later due to threaten Georgia and the Carolinas, possibly sparing Florida a direct hit, as communities in those states raised alert levels. In its direct, immediate path the monster storm was headed for the Bahamian northwestern islands of Grand Bahama and Abaco. Minnis said that 73,000 people and 21,000 homes were at risk to storm surges of up to 15 fee...

Dorian to hit Bahamas as 'devastating' hurricane, then menace Georgia and Carolinas

READ MORE JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Reuters) – Hurricane Dorian punched northwest on Saturday to threaten Georgia and the Carolinas, possibly sparing Florida a direct hit, as the Bahamas braced for catastrophic waves and wind from the muscular category 4 storm. Florida towns told residents to remain vigilant despite forecasts they might dodge a Dorian landfall, as a tropical storm watch was issued for the state’s south Atlantic coast. Communities in northeast Florida, Georgia and South Carolina raised alert levels, with residents filling sandbags as authorities tested infrastructure and hurricane drills. South Carolina on Saturday joined Georgia, North Carolina and Florida in declaring a state of emergency. Bahamas Prime Minister Hubert Minnis begged residents of Abaco and Grand Bahamas to head for the main island to escape the “devastating, dangerous” storm. “I want you to remember: homes, houses, structures can be replaced. READ MORE (Reuters) – A white male in his 30s who was known to police killed four people and wounded 21 others on Saturday in a gun rampage between the west Texas cities of Midland and Odessa that started with a traffic stop and ended when he was killed by officers, authorities said. The suspect hijacked a postal van and opened fire on police officers, motorists and shoppers before being shot dead outside a multiplex cinema complex in Odessa, police said. Authorities originally thought there were two shooters driving two vehicles, but Odessa Police Chief Michael Gerke told a press conference on Saturday evening that he believed there was only one. The suspect is believed to have shot the police officer who stopped his vehicle on Interstate 20 at around 2.30 p.m. local time and then went on a shooting spree that spread terror through shopping centers and movie theaters on a busy Labor Day holiday weekend in the two cities, which lie about 20 miles (32 km) apart in the Permian oil b...

Bernie Sanders proposes canceling $81 billion U.S. medical debt

READ MORE WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. presidential contender Bernie Sanders proposed a plan on Saturday to cancel $81 billion in existing past-due medical debt for Americans, but offered no details on how it would be financed. Sanders, an independent U.S. senator from Vermont, said in a statement that under his plan, the government would negotiate and pay off past-due medical bills that have been reported to credit agencies. The proposal, he said, would also repeal some elements of the 2005 Bankruptcy reform bill and allow other existing and future medical debt to be discharged. “In the United States of America, your financial life and future should not be destroyed because you or a member of your family gets sick,” said Sanders. “That is unacceptable. I am sick and tired of seeing over 500,000 Americans declare bankruptcy each year because they cannot pay off the outrageous cost of a medical emergency or a hospital stay.” According to Sanders, medical...

ICRA downgrades Indiabulls Housing long-term ratings to AA+ from AAA

READ MORE Credit rating agency ICRA has downgraded mortgage lender Indiabulls Housing Finance’s (IBHL) long-term debt instruments to AA+ from AAA, on account of rising woes for non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) and housing finance companies (HFCs). The NBFC and HFC sectors have been plagued by increase in cost of funds and prolonged squeeze in liquidity. The rating of IBHL remains under watch with “developing implications” in light of its merger proposal Laxmi Vilas Bank. “While the scheme has received approval from the Competition Commission of India, key approvals from regulators including the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), are still pending,” said ICRA. The revision in ratings of the debt instruments has factored in challenges in maintaining the asset quality, which stem from the continued slowdown in the real estate sector. The realty sector has been hit by subdued sales and rising challenges on the funding front, said ICRA. ICRA has do...
